This icon was intended for New Helfta in honor of the "Green" Holy Trinity I had in a dream. However, Providence seemed to reveal that it is meant for the Abbey of the Genesee. Mr. and Mrs. James and Betty Morris of New Jersey would like to commission an icon for the Abbey as a gift to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in May 2002. Abbot John picked the Holy Trinity and did not even know I was painting one. I took it as God's will so I agreed to let the Abbey have this icon.

April 15, 2002 One of the two questions I challenged my Spiritual Father the very first time I met with him concerning my conversion to Catholicism was: "Do you know the Holy Trinity?". Frankly, he answered that whoever told me he or she knows the Holy Trinity, that person is a liar unless a very special grace is given to him or her. I was satisfied with that answer for some reasons which I could not clearly explain then. As I am learning, I realize that the more I grow in the spirit, the more I am certain that I don't really know him :-( and neither do I know the Holy Trinity well. I have some kind of perception about this wonderful unity of the divine power. I am sure you do too. Therefore, let us pray for the inspirations and the gifts from the Holy Spirit to help guide us in living our vocation more fruitfully as we continue to walk with faith, love and hope daily into the mystery of the Blessed Trinity. Amen.

January 14, 2003 After going through a spiritual crisis which had something to do with my opinion on the division of the Western and Eastern Church over the theological orthodox concerning the Holy Trinity, more than ever, I feel so privilege to have been given this gift of depicting this icon which carries the image of the mystery of our Christian faith.

When I was asked to paint the Pantocrator icon by Rev. Father John Eudes for the Abbey of the Genesee, I did not know what a blessing it was until one day Rev. Father asked me: "How does it feel to be asked to paint an image of our Lord?" I did not have a very good answer then because I did not know much about my Christian faith. I was not even a year old Catholic at that time. However, that question stuck in my mind. It often comes up every time I do an icon commission. Today, I feel that grace so strongly.

O my most Blessed Holy Trinity! Please give me the inspiration; speak to my heart, mind, and soul and guide my every brush stroke so that whatever the final appearance turns out to be, may it give great glory and honor to you whom your creatures could neither comprehend nor perceive through words or images.

Please help guide my prayers for the unity of all nations, all religions and races. And as I am learning the history of our Church, I pray especially for the unity of Eastern and Western Churches. Amen.

February 6, 2003 If it were I who had the real honor to welcome the Holy Trinity as our Father Abraham and his wife Sarah did, what would I prepare for them? Now that I have the privilege to be creative while painting this icon, meditating on this, I don't really know what I would have offered them. It is quite a challenge all right! Parts of me want to give them what I think that are most beautiful, valuable and magnificent. Other parts of me want to focus on the spiritual aspect of it. However, these two often contradict each other, the visible and the invisible, the temporal and the spiritual, etc. Well, I guess I want to give them all I have of both worlds now that I am in one and yearn for the other which is to come.

February 12, 2003 "O my dear Lord! What is happening? :-( It has been awhile and several brush strokes have been applied to your red cloak, but it keeps on soaking up the paints and nothing seems to happen the way I would like it to appear. This is quite unusual for me!

I know I will never be worthy enough to have the privilege to chose the color and to make your cloak the way it appears in this icon. It is your loving mercy and goodness that you allow me to do so. I will wait in patience. I will leave your holy cloak alone for now. In faith and prayer I pray that you will help guiding my hand and the brush strokes when you think I am ready. Of course I try to listen and want to do the best I can to please you."

Today, I reflect on our chaos world and wonder much about the selfishness and cowardice of human pride which is the very cause of hatred, jealousy, greed, suffering and grief.... "Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven."

We trust in your almighty power and loving mercy which surpass all evil forces in this world O Lord! Amen.

February 20, 2003 Today as I was busy painting the hair of the three Persons, all of a sudden I realized as if I were combing their hair. Or better yet, I was fixing their hair. That was quite humble. I got scared because it is such a privilege which I would never thought of asking for.

I then told them that I am just a painter and asked them to forgive me for thinking too much. I was being scrupulous about it. They seemed to laugh at me. It may be because I was being too proud. I measured their love according to my human standard!...

The icon is almost done. Praise the Trinity for inspiring me! So far, I like it very very much. Like my Geneseo Crucifix, I know I will have a very hard time detaching from it! But since I know the brothers will take good care of it and will profit much from it, I feel better today. I will put some details of the progress up in the next couple days. I could not wait to depict the faces which I will paint in the next few days. They are what make the icon special and unique. Please pray for me. Thank you.

February 26, 2003 I was getting quite proud alright! with this precious gift. And as I saw the images of the Persons of the Trinity begin to emerge, I got big-headed as if I did it all by myself. I make a real effort to guard my pride, but there is no escape to being tempted. It is a way the Lord keeps me humble, and I know I need it.

Besides being a tough, honest and good critic, Rev. Father also keeps guard of my spiritual honesty and attitude toward this precious call - being a icon painter. He reminds me that sometimes when a special gift is given to someone, it does not mean that he or she is worthy of it, but on the contrary, a reason for it is because of God's merciful love. I sure understand that this given gift to me is very much a mean to help me grow deeper in holiness. It will take a lifetime, but I know our desire to do good sure pleases the Lord! If you reflect on this, you will have to agree with me that for every gift, there always seems to be a shadow that accompanies it as to help, to humble and to remind us to use it with the right purpose and proper attitude - all for the glory of Him who is good and loving to us all.

Two days ago I spent several hours depicting just the face of the Second person, our Lord Jesus. What a challenge! By the end of the day, I decided that I had to start all over again :-(. The day before that I had to do the same thing with the inside garment of the Third Person, the Holy Spirit. I altered the style and the color (white to orange-cream) so that they suite with the rest of the others. Harmony plays a big role especially in this icon. There are three distinct Persons but only one Trinitarian God!

With helpful inputs on the spiritual and physical aspects of the Trinity from Rev. Father, praise the Lord! after several hours in one day, three lovely distinctive but harmonious faces were formed, and somehow they helped complete the personality of the Trinity icon.

Thank you and praise you Lord! I guess my anguish and distress during my down time were necessary! Thank you for picking me up!

Please continue to enlighten and sustain us all during this time when our world is in such chaos and trouble.
Please help us to be faithful to you and to be kind and loving to our human brothers and sisters.
Help us to contemplate deeper into the mystery of your goodness to the world you created because of love so that no matter what seems to be on the shallow surface, we always have hope in you. Amen.

March 3, 2003 With helpful insights and reminders of Rev. Father on the spiritual and physical aspects of the Holy Trinity and with his prayers, praise the Lord! three most lovely distinctive but harmonious faces have begun to emerge. My soul rejoiced and overwhelmed as it saw the faithful little brush and the artist's hand danced in the spirit of prayer and thanksgiving while the final bush strokes were about to complete the portrait of the most holy faces. Together, they spoke of your magnificent and glory O most Blessed Trinity! With great attention, care and joy, the brush, the paint, the egg medium entrusted themselves totally to the hands of the happy soul.

And as the bright and happy sun began to depart for the day, the faces helped complete the personality of the Trinity icon! I guess my anguish and distress during my down time were necessary for "when I feel lost, I try harder to search for you" Thank you for picking me up!

Church of the Annuciation of the Everlasting Love Blessed Trinity icon

March 25, 2003 HAPPY FEAST OF THE ANNUNCIATION OF THE LORD! Praise the Blessed Trinity! Today on this special feast, the icon was delivered to the Genesee Abbey. I hope they find it inspiring as much as I do. Actually, I miss it already. It had been more than a year today when the panel was first built by Paul Conklin of York.

My other carpenter, Spencer Furbush skillfully built this beautiful stand for the icon. The icon was placed and built into the stand perfectly today. Many thanks to Spencer for his enthusiasm and good work.

All of a sudden, I found myself quite exhausted physically, emotionally and spiritually after the icon was delivered. As friends often make comments about how I treat my art works as if they were my children, this time is no exception. :-). I put everything I've got into this icon especially in the last few months. I did not realize how involved I was with it emotionally and spiritually until it was detached from me. This experience sure gives me a helpful insight to reflect on, especially during this time when our world is in much chaos dealing with war, crimes and violence which cause separation of families and loved ones who bear much grief and suffering.

A question came to mind after the icon was painted: I wonder how many of us, Christians really recognize and perceive how intimately the Trinitarian God works in us? not just the Son, Jesus, but the Father and the Holy Spirit, too. A while ago during a spiritual meeting, I told Rev. Father John Eudes that I felt as if I knew the Third Person, the Holy Spirit more than the other two. He agreed with me. But as time goes on, I get to know Jesus more and more especially through listening to the teaching of the Gospels. And I don't know how it happened, but now I feel quite comfortable with God the Father, too. I guess a good reason for it is because they are three distinct Persons but one Trinitarian God!...

May the Blessed Trinity of the everlasting love continue to guide us on our journey home despite the facts that there are so much distractions, troubles and sufferings in the present world. Amen.

March 29, 2003 Here it is where it belongs: the Abbey Chapter room. Many thanks to Br. Anthony Weber for all his enthusiasm and help which made this icon project possible!

Question: "I keep wondering at the amount of talent and effort to create something like this and the guts to set it out for others."


It sure takes 'abandonment, trust, and confidence' knowing that he is in total control. It seemed the Lord was always there watching me paint. As much as I struggled and prayed for inspirations at times when I thought I knew it all (pride!), I always felt quite comfortable asking him to guide my soul and hands - 'Take my hands and let them move at the impulse of Thy love... Take my will and make it Thy, it shall be no longer mine.' "

Question: "... about the faces. They are almost angular and pinched. I am not sure of this."

Answer: "... I saved the faces to paint last because I think they are the most important parts of the whole painting.

There are many different versions how the image of the Holy Trinity is depicted throughout the centuries. Not until in the later centuries, one could find facial expressions were more prominent. However many the icons were quite small so it is harder to paint small faces with much expression. ... an ambitious artist that I am, I don't want to paint something just to paint it! Therefore, this icon is sized the way it is. This allows me to have more freedom and to be able to pay more attention to the facial expressions.

Rev. Father J. E. shared with me:

(According to the Tradition, '... the Father depicted as older. However in Rublev's Trinity icon (a well known one), it shows all three as young and in fact does not attempt to bring out much character at all by facial features. He suggests relations by having the Father's head and gaze directed to the Son, and the Son seems to face the Spirit but his eyes are directed up as to the Father. The Spirit in turn is the same age as the Son it seems, but his gaze is inward, not directed to either of the others. Beyond that the classical painting of this version of the Trinity (that mine is modeled on) does not attempt to differentiate or characterize the persons by facial features. But the features are only outlined. Other approaches show the Father as older, usually with a beard, ...'

So, after prayers and meditations on these different Traditions, with God's grace, I was inspired and depicted what now appeared on the icon.

You must agree with me that a unique way a person's character is known to others is through their work such as poetry, music, writings, etc. An artist, therefore is known through his and her art. My art works, especially the holy images pretty much reveal my inner stage of soul and perhaps its perception and understanding of whom it tries to depict.

For those of us viewers and audiences, we have different psychology and life experiences which affect greatly the way we understand others through their works. For instance, a spiritual father would have a better understanding and appreciation for his student than a perfect stranger who neither know the student nor his work.

Looking at the icon, we all agree that I could just reveal and express partially what my soul perceives and knows of the Blessed Trinity through a thick panel of wood buried under 15 layers of gesso-gelatin mixture, several thousands of brush strokes of egg tempera paints consist of egg yoke, water, vinegar, and color pigments.

I hope and pray that with an open mind and an appreciation for God's gift reveals uniquely in each of his members, in faith we will perceive better who he is - the mysterious and awesome God who is all in all!

April 12, 2003 Question: "Why does the Trinity characters look so feminine? Is it the style? Is it the representation of the essence of the words?"

Answer: "Like many things in life, with faith I just knew that I would like to do my very best to paint the faces, and I had the conviction and the desire to do so despite the fact that I did not have any specific images in mind to model after. The Blessed Trinity after all is the mystery of our Christian faith.

Actually, now that you mentioned it, I reflect back and realize that I was never really consciously trying to make them look either masculine or feminine. I don't know how to describe it. The faces just gradually formed. When they got to the point where they appeared real, dear, loving and familiar to me, I stopped. I did go back to touch them up but the original characters always stayed as what they are now. It was more like being lost in grace searching for some thing you don't really know. Though as you search, you feel so totally united with some "being" whom you so dearly love, yearn for and trust with your whole being. In faith I would say: 'Who else but our Trinitarian God with whom we are so freely and completely united with ...'

However, psychologically, there are other explanations for this as well:

1. The Jewish tradition of long braided hair does soften the masculine characters quite a bit if there happened to be any in the faces I depicted.
2. This icon image is depicted after the Old Testament story of the three angels visiting Abraham and Sarah. According to Tradition, the three angels in this setting are known as the Old Testament representation of the Blessed Trinity. Often, many of us imagine angels as beautiful, loving, and gentle creatures (at least I do). Therefore, the faces look as feminine as you see them.
3. We so often find our true inner self here and there traveling our journey searching for the Trinitarian God who is so very personal to each one of us. For me, painting icons plays a very special role in this journey. I unconsciously express my inner self and prayers through them. My personality and feminine characters sure reveal in these paintings. Again, this is another reason why you see the Trinity the way it is.

Question: "... how did you feel about the icon?"

Answer: In general, I like it very much. I am very satisfy with the way it came out. Somehow, I always had the confidence that it would be so beautiful and perfect (according to my God's given standard!) even when I first decided to paint it which was more than a year ago because I knew I would want to give it all I have got.

As the images of the Blessed Trinity emerged and defined the character of the icon, I really had a hard time now and then thinking of detaching from it (one of my weaknesses which helps humble me). However, it was like a miracle. After the icon was delivered, somehow the Lord gave me peace and reassured me it is where it belongs. At least, I know it will be an inspiration for many others who encounter it, especially the brothers of Genesee Abbey. I was just being attached and selfish, but that is expected for a person like me!

It sure is a grace all the way. While painting it, if I was not experiencing peace and joy, the Lord sure used different opportunities to help purify my soul. NO DOUBT he did, and at times, I learned them the hard ways. However, it was worth it. A result is the lovely Blessed Trinity of Everlasting Love icon! I feel very honor and grateful for the opportunity to paint it.

May 4, 2003 Question: "Perhaps the work in progress would make an interesting story on your site especially if you give your interpretation of the icon. Particularly the meaning of the building in the background which some are wondering about."

Answer: " When I first worked on the sketch, looking at Rublev's Trinity, I wanted to change the house behind the Second Person and the mountain behind the Third Person to St. Peter's and Hagia Sofia. It was a way of expressing my great hope for the unity of the Eastern and Western Churches. However, when I envisioned them, they sounded complicated. I knew they would be distractions instead. A better inspiration came to mind. How about the Universal Church and a mountain? In some ways, they would serve as reminders or would represent a well-rounded Church in which a Christian strives to live a holy life following Christ's footsteps being both active and contemplative.

Wonderful! But how can one depict the Universal Church when one does not even comprehend it fully, except she knows and is aware of it by faith? OK, let it be represented by a church. But what is it going to look like, and how should I design it since I am just an icon painter with many ambitious dreams? Well, the Universal Church is made up of the people of God. I, a laborer, will do what I can, then the Lord will make it work in whatever way he pleases.

'O dearest Lord, it is not by chance that you entrust your people with different special gifts. They are to glorify you, O Giver of all gifts!. They are to praise you for your abundant goodness and loving mercy. They are for us to serve one another, and last but not least, to help each of us grow in relationship with one another and therefore with you. Therefore, O Lord, may I make it personal to me? That is: may I design it as if it were New Helfta? And then for each of my brother and sister who encounters it, may it too inspire them to make it their own as your special dwelling place in them O Lord! Amen.'

Why the Annunciation church? It was in early August of last year, 2002 when I first found out that the emblem of St. Gertrude's Helfta monastery was the Annunciation scene. About a week later, Lynn Kennison, my Godmother who just got back from Italy brought me a gift. I was being my usual self telling her I don't want any gift (I am very bad at that). Despite my unappreciative comments, patiently and lovingly, she smiled and opened the wrapping, and there it was a copy of Della Robbia's famous Annunciation. She bought it from a store in Assisi without knowing anything about the emblem of Helfta monastery. I am very convinced that my dear saints, Francis and Clare helped her pick it out. I was very happy to have received it. Knowing how the Lord has always been generously and kindly working in me, I knew in my heart that it was meant for New Helfta. Rev. Father John Eudes was happy to bless it for me, and it has been hanging above the entrance of my New Helfta cell since.

Joyfully and peacefully, I could see the Spirit at work as to reassure me of the guidance of the Blessed Trinity. I then recalled vividly in one of Rev. Father John Eudes' talks in which he explained explicitly how our Blessed Mother is the perfect example of a blessed soul unites fully with the Blessed Trinity in a very special way. Until I could find and quote it, here is another version which he wrote:

"From St. Luke's Gospel account of the annunciation, it is clear that Mary had a special relation with each of the three persons of the Trinity... 'The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High [that is, the Father] will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born (the Son) will be holy" She always remembered these words and they became so many mysterious channels of knowledge concerning God's way of being as well as his way of dealing with her. Although she did not, of course, know the word Trinity, she had the experience of relating to God in these three personal ways which are the three persons of the Trinity."

Here we see how I started out wanting the Annunciation to be as close as Della Robbia's. However, my faithful art critic suggested that he thought it would be better if I colored it. I humbly prayed about it, and guess what? He was right!

Now that I knew it is going to be the Annunciation church, the question is how I should design it? It should have the essential elements of a church such as, a bell tower, a cross, etc... As I continued on, I realized how much I had become acquainted with Genesee abbey church and its rock walls which I like very much. Even though I purposely tried to design it from my creativity, I could not help it. Anyone who appreciates the beauty of the Abbey church and knows it well, could easily tell the Annunciation church is inspired by it, as if one were to say: 'Genesee community way of life and spirit has a lot of influence on New Helfta.'

The icon was finished a few days before the feast of St. Joseph. Without knowing much about what are in the icon, Abbot John told me to take time and bring it over on the feast of the Annunciation of the Lord!
Our Heavenly Father always knows best!"

June 12, 2003 Question: "But could you explain to me...? I see the Nativity at Bethlehem in the left background, and the hill to Calvary on the right - is that correct? Of course, I see the bread and wine on the center of the table ... I presume the blossoming tree is significant - 'the wood of the cross?'"

Answer: Two years ago when I brought the Geneseo Crucifix to Washington Theological Union school in D.C. for a show, I encountered a quote that said a work of art is not complete until it is on display, and that the artist gets feedback from the people. This is very true indeed! What also interesting is that I often find I learn more about what I unconsciously paint from the viewers' feedback and comments. In this icon especially, the Blessed Trinity reveals and speaks to each soul uniquely, and each soul, in return perceives and responds to the Trinitarian God differently. Therefore, I think it makes sense that we may see different things and have different interpretation of what are in the icon (of course, theologically, we need to follow and focus on what is right and essential to the teaching of our faith).

The last update I did not really finish giving my whole interpretation of the icon as suggested to me. (Yes Lord! Thank you for reminding me through the May-8-2003 questions). I now will try to share mine. If you are inspired, you are welcome to share yours. After all we are all learning!

I talked about the Annunciation church and mentioned about the mountain which represents the contemplative aspect of the Christian life. For me, figuratively the mountain here symbolizes a life of prayer and solitude in union with God. However, one is welcome to interpret and connect this mountain with any of the mount or location (the hill to Calvary for instance) mentions in the Gospels in which we find the Lord so often went to pray, to "converse intimately with God and to be preoccupied with his company" (EVAGRIUS PONTICUS' Chapters on Prayer #34). Artistically, I studied the ancient egg tempera painting medium (the painting medium of this icon) in Siena, Italy. The mountain here was depicted in the style of a well-known Italian medieval master artist Giotto (an example is in his painting cycle of the Life of St. Francis of Assisi in the upper church of the Basilica of St. Francis). I also depicted this kind of mountain in the Geneseo Crucifix. This seems to be my little way of showing my gratitude to the Italian master artists whose works inspired me greatly which eventually played a big role in my conversion to Catholicism about six years ago.

Looking at both the church and the mountain, one can find the source of light and life (the Resurrection) coming from the left in the background. Theologically, this connects with where Christ is in the foreground for God sent his only begotten Son who is our light and our life....

The background colors go gradually from white to blue. In this case, I was inspired by another Italian master artist Giovanni di Paolo in his Il Paradiso (Paradise). What could be more appropriate and desirable than to contemplate God in paradise!

Traditionally, the tree behind God the Father is understood to be the Tree of Life. Our friend raised the question whether this is "the wood of the cross?" If we reflect and pray about this, we will not be surprised to see that theologically they are connected. This, therefore, helps one to see the connection why the mountain could be seen as the hill to Calvary!
May the Trinity enlighten our heart and mind! Thank you Holy Spirit for inspiring such questions and insights!

I intended to have the foreground appear somewhat ambiguous and mysterious. This was meant to provoke the viewers' curiosity which I hope it will encourage their reflection more deeply on the nature of the Blessed Trinity. One day while taking some measurement for building the stand for the icon, Spencer, the carpenter pointed out to me that he saw the "sea of glass" as mentioned in Revelation: "Also before the throne there was what looked like a sea of glass, clear as crystal" (Rev. 4:6). At the time, the icon was still in progress. Spencer helped reassuring me that I was on the right path!

The bread and wine depicted on the table emphasize the love of the Father who gave us his only begotten Son for our redemption and salvation. They also remind us of our participating in the mass of the Last Supper in which the Holy Sacraments are essential to our daily journey toward God in the heavenly home. We are invited and encouraged to desire to enter to that intimate union with the Trinitarian God in a personal way.

In his SUNDAY AFTER THE ASCENSION: CHAPTER, Rev. Father John Eudes quoted St. Irenaeus who "goes on to affirm with impressive insistence:

'So without the Spirit there is no seeing the Word of God, and without the Son there is no approaching the Father; for the Son is knowledge of the Father, and knowledge of the Son is through the Holy Spirit. But the Son, according to the Father's good pleasure, administers the Spirit charismatically as the Father will, to those to whom he will.'"

As baptized Christians, we are confident that the Spirit has given to assist us in our every way, every moment and every where. So according to St. Irenaeus, we are sure embraced by the Blessed Trinity, and our Blessed Mother is the perfect example of it:

"She does enter into a most intimate personal relationship with the Blessed Trinity as she becomes mother of Jesus. She creates, by the power of God, a new possibility for human-divine intimacy which began when the Word became flesh in her womb and was perfected in her Assumption. Her abiding union with God is, in God's plan, a manifestation of the new creation that each of us is intended to share in. She is not only the most perfect exemplar of what we are to become, she is actively contributing to our joining her in the presence of her Son, by her intercession on our behalf." --Rev. Father's homily, FEAST OF MARY, MOTHER OF GOD: HOMILY

This is the very reason why the patten and chalice on the table were painted in blue in her honor. And usually on her feast days, one can see the blue chalice used during mass at Genesee Abbey.

O Blessed Mother, please intercede for us so that with our generous response to the given grace, like you we may enter into full communion with the Blessed Trinity of Ever-lasting Love! Amen.

Happy Trinity Sunday

Amidst the celebrations of this glorious and awesome feast of our faith we formally blessed our new icon, Blessed Trinity of Everlasting Love, as part of the morning's chapter meeting...

Abbot John introduced the blessing as follows:

Dear Brothers, we have genuine reason to rejoice, because we are about to bless this icon of the Most Holy Trinity. This icon honors and reveals the Three in One, our God who is above all things and through all things and in all things. God is above all things as Father, for He is the principle and source; He is through all things through the Word; and He is in all things in the Holy Spirit. Therefore, when we honor this image, let us lift up our minds and hearts to the One who is love and grace and fellowship.
